Elizabeth joined Quo Vadis Trust after experiencing significant trauma. Since coming into supported housing, she’s made incredible progress—building confidence, finding strength, and giving back through volunteering. Here, she shares her story in her own words.
When did you first come to Quo Vadis and what was going on for you at that time?
I have been through a lot of trauma before coming to QVT.
What were the most positive, as well as challenging aspects of being in supported housing?
People ground me to feel safe. I always have someone to talk to, which I did not have before. I feel positive being here. I have been comfortable working on my past traumas.
How has Quo Vadis helped you?
QVT is like a crutch to lean on, I can rely on it. I don’t think I would be at the level I am today without QVT.
What was life like for you before taking part in activities with volunteers?
I used to go to the gym before COVID-19. I stopped, but I am back again at the gym. My meditation has helped me with my trauma. Which I do without fail every day.
What motivated you to get involved in activities and become a volunteer?
I wanted to give meaning to my life and to the other people I am helping. Now, the more I come here, the more I like to come.
What has changed as a result of this involvement?
Lots of changes, I am learning new things, I am doing volunteer training. My confidence is better, and I am feeling strong.
What would you say to others who are considering participating in activities, working on goals, or becoming a volunteer?
I would say to do it, because it opens a door for you. When you communicate with other people, you show them that you can get to the level you want by working on yourself. Volunteering gives meaning to my life because I like to do positive things. I like interacting with other people.
Do you have anything else you would like to tell me about activities or general staff support?
I recommend activities to anybody who wants to have a fulfilling life. You feel like you’re doing something positive in your life.
What are your plans and hopes for the future?
I see myself going to places that I would think I would never go. I am a lot stronger in my body and my mind, and I have a very positive outlook on my life and my future.
