Here at QVT we took part in Diabetes Awareness Week from the 14th– 20th June 2021. As part of this informative week we held a presentation at a Verdant Lane scheme, hosted by our Student on Placement, ‘Gulia’. She gave all of our clients and team on duty a very interesting talk about the different types of diabetes, as well as the signs and symptoms to look out for.

Afterwards we were able to use a Glucometer to test clients glucose levels and found one client ‘Joanne’* had higher than deemed normal glucose. In response to this result our team advised her to contact her GP for an appointment and a further investigation which she has now done. Joanne was initially reluctant to take part in the talk as she did not feel this was relevant to her, but now says that she is happy that she did – so a worthwhile exercise if it has flagged up something untoward and that can hopefully be treated swiftly.

As part of this event we made a variety of healthy smoothies, the purpose being to educate our clients on the importance of a healthy diet and its relevance to the potential onset of diabetes. Our volunteers ensured our other schemes were involved in this week of awareness, delivering Diabetes Information Presentations for them and being on hand to answer any questions.

Taking part in awareness weeks such as these encourage our clients to take care of themselves, and the importance of good physical health working alongside looking after your mental health.
