At Quo Vadis Trust, we’re passionate about creating safe, supportive and empowering environments for our residents. This year, we were delighted to welcome Mary Xtian as our new Housing Manager!
Mary joined QVT at the end of April, and has already made a positive impact, managing our new site in Purley and preparing to take on our upcoming Sanderstead development — a 46-bed accommodation that will provide much-needed housing and support for our clients.
We sat down with Mary to learn more about her background, her approach to leadership, and her vision for the future of QVT’s housing services.
Can you tell us a little about your background and what led you to work for QVT?
I have worked in social care for over 20 years, in various capacities. I have worked for major housing providers like Metropolitan Housing, Notting Hill Genesis, and Housing 21.
My last job before QVT was in south London, and I enjoyed the benefits of working locally, as previously I worked in Brent, Ealing, Hammersmith, and Westminster. I did not know about QVT initially, but I liked the service information online, and that captured my interest.
What has your time been like at QVT so far?
My time so far has been great — I’ve felt well received and supported. Our Chief Executive (Ingrid) carried out our team induction, which was a remarkable experience for me. We had the opportunity to meet all department heads and some colleagues who will be integral to ensuring service efficiency and a positive experience for our residents.
My fellow Housing Managers have been amazing, assisting me with service information and recruitment for Plough Lane and Daffodil House, our upcoming services.
My line manager has been fantastic — she doesn’t micromanage but is always available when needed. Aditee supported me with learning new systems like PlanDay, and with arranging relief staff while I found my feet. The family-oriented nature of QVT isn’t just words — it’s true. They care for both residents and staff, and that ethos comes directly from our CEO, filtering through the whole organisation.
What are your priorities as you step into the Housing Manager role?
QVT is a well-liked and reputable organisation. I want to build on that positive image by being intentional about residents’ support experiences and working closely to ensure they achieve their very best outcomes while living at a QVT scheme.
How would you describe your leadership or management style?
My leadership style is flexible and depends on the situation. There are times I am more autocratic, but most of the time I take a participatory approach so I can carry the team along.
My decisions are driven by two key principles: the safety of our residents and the reputation of the organisation. I will not compromise on either. I can be direct, which helps in difficult situations, but I also reflect on my decisions and learn from them if they weren’t the best. Every day, I work towards excellence.
What do you see as some of the biggest challenges facing supported housing now?
The biggest challenge is a lack of resources from the government, which has led to service closures in the community. This affects all providers, who then have to find creative ways to generate income to remain sustainable and support capital development.
Another challenge is the government’s regulation of housing, which puts the burden on landlords to ensure properties meet high safety and quality standards — something that requires significant financial management.
How do you hope to make a difference to the lives of QVT’s clients?
I am very involved in the lives of our residents. As my team is fairly new to the industry, I often attend the practical aspects of support — such as key work sessions — to ensure support plans are person-centred. I also liaise with partner agencies to make sure our residents receive holistic support.
I’ve stayed in supported housing for so long because it is deeply rewarding to see residents achieve their goals and progress to new stages in their lives. That brings me great satisfaction.
Is there a quote, value, or principle that guides your work?
In both my personal and professional life, my goal is always to add value and make a positive difference to the life of anyone who comes into contact with me. I hope that will be my legacy.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I really enjoyed travelling when I was single and free, and I hope to start again in the near future. I like to meet up with friends and hang out. Recently, I was reunited with colleagues from my secondary school through social media — we had lost contact for over 40 years! It was amazing, and it has really broadened my social network.
