In a bid to provide stable and supportive accommodation for vulnerable young adults transitioning out of the care system, here at QVT we thought that we would unveil our pioneering care leavers’ housing schemes based in Lewisham. Our innovative supported housing program aims to address the pressing need for secure housing options for individuals aged 18-25 who have aged out of foster care or other care arrangements, often finding themselves at risk of homelessness and lacking the necessary support networks.
The aim of the schemes is to provide support: whether it’s emotional support, with their benefits, or with regards to their education. We also aid them in applying for jobs, along with the help of the Young People’s personal advisors from Social Services.
This support helps them prepare themselves to be able to live independently, and throughout their time at the scheme they will be bidding to be able to move into their own council assisted housing.
Our charity wants to make sure that these young people are in the best position for that move, and that they go on to lead happy and fulfilling lives.
In November 2023 we opened Scheme A, a full-fledged care leaver service. It’s now fully occupied with 6 male care leavers living there full time, and looked after by a housing manager and housing officer. The scheme is monitored by them 9-5, 7 days a week, enabling them to have plenty of support and guidance when needed.
We are delighted to have opened another Care Leaver scheme in Lewisham last week for another 6 young males, known as Scheme B.
As you can see from our photos, each individual accommodation has been designed to be functional with kitchenette, bedroom facilities and desk/study space, whilst being homely and stylish (as all young people want!). Scheme A also has a common room/ meeting space and laundry room, plus garden for socialising and enjoying nature.
Monique James, Housing Manager at our Scheme A, says:
“I have been the housing manager for the care leavers project since we opened in 2021. I believe that supportive accommodation for our young people is highly beneficial for several reasons.
Firstly, our accommodations provide stability and security for our young people who may otherwise be at risk of homelessness or unstable housing situations. Having a stable place to live can contribute to bettering their mental health and overall well-being, with help from our qualified staff members, we help our young people to access resources and services tailored to their needs such as counselling, life skills training, educational support, and employment assistance. Our amazing housing officers also facilitate access to these services, helping our young people build the skills and confidence they need to succeed independently.
Secondly, we support our young people to connect with their peers who may be facing similar challenges. This sense of community can provide invaluable support and encouragement as they navigate the transition to adulthood.
Lastly, by providing our young people with stable housing and support services, we can help prevent homelessness and its associated negative consequences, such as involvement in the criminal justice system, substance abuse, and chronic unemployment.
Overall, supportive living for our young people is seen as a proactive and effective approach to addressing housing insecurity and promoting positive outcomes for our young people and society alike, we see how rewarding our services are to our young people every day and that is why we do what we do

“As a housing officer at Faversham, I have had the privilege of getting to know these individuals and their stories. Each encounter shows their determination and potential. Connecting with them has been rewarding, and I have seen how they strive to overcome challenges and build a better future. Getting to know these young people has been a rewarding experience. Through our conversations and interactions, I have witnessed their determination to overcome obstacles and pursue their goals.
Our housing schemes are not just for providing a place to live, it’s about offering hope and opportunity to young people who deserve a chance to succeed. As a housing officer, I am proud to be part of this journey, and I look forward to continuing to support and empower the next generation”
